Platts Wireless SMS Service FAQs

Q.   What is SMS, and how are the messages sent to my phone?
A.   Short messaging service enables short text messages (up to 160 characters) to be sent to or received by a mobile phone. If a phone is out of coverage area, in use, or turned off, the service holds the message until the phone comes back into the service area or becomes available to receive the message. Using SMS is easy. Short messages can originate from other phones or the Internet, but they're all delivered via a short messaging center. The SMS centers receive messages from a range of places, including phones within their networks, the Internet, and other mobile operators at SMS centers. Then they send those messages to their customers.

Q.   How can I subscribe to your services?
A.   Log on to www.platts.com/wireless and click the "REGISTER" link for information for contacting a Platts Wireless SMS sales representative..

Q.   Do I have to be a Global Alert subscriber to get this service?
A.   Yes, a subscription to Platts Global Alert is required in order to receive Platts Wireless SMS Service.

Q.   Approximately how long will it take me to receive the alerts after I fill out my registration forms?
A.   Subsequent to proper authorization by a Platts representative, and assuming that the wireless service provider and phone of choice is SMS-capable, service should begin two to five days following the request.

Q.   What costs are associated with Platts SMS Wireless? Can this be added to my bill for Global Alert?
A.   Platts Wireless SMS service will be treated in the same manner as an "add-on" Platts Global Alert (PGA) terminal. Platts will assess a flat per-terminal charge associated with the Wireless SMS Service that may be addressed via an amended fee schedule to an existing PGA subscription and thus handled through the same billing procedure as the initial PGA terminal. The fees charged by Platts DO NOT include charges associated with wireless distribution to your phone. Also, your wireless service provider will likely levy additional charges for SMS messages. Said fees are also dependent upon the amount of information selected for distribution via Platts Wireless SMS Service. For these reasons, we strongly recommend that you review and understand the terms of your wireless service plan in order to assess the potential additional fees associated with distribution.

Q.   If I forget my User Password, how do I get a new one?
A.   Visit www.platts.com/wireless and click on the "Forgot Password?" listing. Once the form is filled out and sent, the password will be sent via e-mail to the address provided in the user profile form.

Q.   How do I configure the service so that I only get the prices or news flashes that are important to me?
A.   Distribution of each individual price included in the subscription is configurable from the user configuration screen posted at www.platts.com/wireless, while distribution of news flashes may be configured by delivery time only.

Q.   Can I reconfigure my service at any time?
A.   You can reconfigure your service any time you have access to the Internet and, subsequently, to the appropriate user configuration screen hosted at www.platts.com/wireless.

Q.   What types of mobile phones and wireless providers/services are needed for Platts SMS Wireless?
A.   Generally speaking, the phone and wireless service must be SMS-capable.

Q.   If I change my phone number, can I still access the service?
A.   Yes, simply update the phone number in the appropriate user profile at www.platts.com/wireless to modify delivery of the Platts Wireless SMS Service.

Q.   If I am roaming throughout the country, do I still receive the alerts?
A.   SMS technology requires a digital (versus analog) connection to the wireless provider. As long as the connection to the wireless provider is digital, messages should be delivered/received. Otherwise, messages may be stored and distributed when a digital connection is reestablished. Each wireless provider will likely handle SMS messages in a different manner. We suggest that you consult with your wireless provider to fully understand the provider's procedures and capabilities.

Q.   How do I know if I've received an alert?
A.   Today's digital phones commonly provide user-configurable SMS message notification. For that reason, we recommend that you consult the user manual provided with your digital phone to ensure that such notification is properly configured.

Q.   How many alerts can I receive?
A.   There is no limit to the number you can receive; however, most digital phones have a limited amount of available storage. We recommend that you consult your phone's user manual to determine the capacity specific to the model used.
